Aluminium has been used in luxury garden furniture since the 60s. It has become a very popular choice as it can be used in many ways, from garden chairs to large patio sets. It is a very easy-to-work-with material, offering numerous styles to suit any outdoor decor, which can be made unique with woven rope detailing and other styling techniques.
Is Aluminium Good for Outdoor Furniture?
Aluminium is the perfect material for all-weather outdoor furniture. If it is properly manufactured, it will not rust; it is lightweight and manoeuvrable, and very strong. Aluminium is also extremely practical. If processed properly in the original manufacturing process, it does not rust, rot, or decay. So, not only is aluminium extremely practical, but it is also beautifully adaptable. There are many ways to manufacture aluminium into different styles, which you'll find as you browse our furniture ranges, like the very contemporary Arlo collection and the luxury Sundowner collection.
Luxury aluminium outdoor furniture is extremely low maintenance, which means once you buy your aluminium garden furniture, there is no need for regular upkeep. It can be left outside all year, every year, and will still look just as impressive as when you first bought it - more about this later in the article.
Aluminium is 100% recyclable and loses no quality during this process. It is the world’s most sustainable resource, with nearly 75% of all aluminium ever produced still in use today. So when you buy luxury aluminium outdoor furniture, the metal will have been previously used in some other product, perhaps from an aeroplane wing or an alloy wheel.

Can I Leave Aluminium Garden Furniture Outside in Winter?
Aluminium furniture is the most durable as it's unaffected by the wet and cold. But it is prone to dents and dings if blown over in high winds, which can happen because it’s lightweight. While it's not necessary to cover aluminium furniture, it is essential to ensure it is safely secured during periods of harsh weather to avoid any damage.
Our aluminium garden furniture is painted or powder-coated with premium finishes, which means that it has an extra layer of protection. If the coating ever gets scratched or damaged, we can supply touch-up paint for our furniture to remedy any small marks. The amazing thing about aluminium is that if the raw metal is exposed, the metal is very reactive and will protect itself from corrosion.
Aluminium doesn't rust like steel or iron. But it does oxidise when the raw metal is exposed to air, water, or soil. Aluminium reacts with oxygen to form a thin coat of aluminium oxide that chemically bonds to the surface of the metal. The coat is characterised by a powdery white or dull grey finish. The coat of aluminium oxide formed hardens onto the surface and unlike rust, it doesn't flake. It keeps the metal free from corrosion unless the layer of aluminium oxide is removed.

How Do You Maintain Aluminium Garden Furniture?
Aluminium garden furniture, unlike many other outdoor furniture materials, doesn't require much maintenance. A lot of our furniture comes with free weather covers, or they can be purchased separately. Covering your furniture is the best way to protect it from the elements and other common nuisances like tree sap, bird droppings, and general dirt and debris - this just means you won't have to clean it as much as you would if you left it uncovered.
Check your furniture for any scratches on the frame coating that have exposed the raw metal, and if you notice any, contact us about touch-up paint. If the metal has started to oxidise, the aluminium corrosion process is actually halted by oxidation — the metal won’t continue to deteriorate unless the aluminium oxide is removed, so don't remove it unless you plan on properly treating the metal. All of this shouldn't be a concern with our high-quality coatings, as long as care is taken when handling, moving, and securing the garden furniture.
The furniture can be looked after like any other painted metal surface. Simply clean it with mild soap and lots of warm water, rinse it down to remove the soap, leave it to dry, and then protect it with a good quality car wax/polish.

How Long Does Aluminium Garden Furniture Last?
In general, a well-maintained and high-quality piece of aluminium furniture should last for many years, often exceeding a decade or more with a little regular maintenance. Aluminium is a very durable material. The types of things that can lead to aluminium furniture not lasting as long are as follows:
-
Weight: Overloading any furniture could lead to structural damage, so please take care not to put too much stress on the furniture.
-
Assembly: Follow the assembly instructions carefully, as improperly assembled furniture could be less stable and more prone to damage.
-
Handling: Handle the furniture with care and avoid rough handling, especially when moving or repositioning items on your patio.
-
Moving: Lift, don't drag when moving your furniture across your patio surface. This will help prevent chips and scratches to both the furniture and your patio.
-
Secure: In windy conditions, secure your furniture to prevent it from being blown over.
By being mindful of these factors and adopting good maintenance practices, you can extend the life of your furniture and ensure that it remains in good working and looking condition.
